Spatial Risk Lab globe iconA game of connected uncertainty

Spatial Risk Lab

Small shocks.
Connected worlds.

A delay at one station. Pressure on a hospital. A surprise in a market. What happens when places are connected — and the size of the surprises keeps changing?

For iPhone, iPad and Android

From a local shock to a system-wide question

Where would you act?

01

Read the pressure

Look beyond the current outcome. Notice where fluctuations become larger, and which places are connected.

02

Choose a response

Use a limited budget to support a place or change a connection. Protect key locations while keeping the system working.

03

Watch what follows

Compare the patterns, revisit your strategy, or challenge a friend with the same mission setup.

Different worlds. The same question of connection.

  • Aviation
  • Air quality
  • Rail transport
  • Finance
  • Health systems
  • Global supply
  • Heat

The idea behind the game

A calm average can hide
a volatile system.

Two places can have similar expected outcomes and very different levels of uncertainty. Volatility is the changing magnitude of fluctuations around an expected level. Connections can link those magnitudes, even when the expected outcomes do not move together.

Our research on spatial and spatiotemporal ARCH/GARCH-type models establishes a class of models for dependence in volatility across connected locations and over time. Some formulations connect volatility across places within the same observation period; temporal formulations can also capture persistence and delayed effects.

The lab makes these ideas explorable through simulated behaviour. Change a connection, follow a cluster of high volatility, and compare what happens. These missions illustrate models; they do not establish the effects of real-world interventions.

Volatility has a spatial structure that can itself be modelled.

A little more about the models

The models have a GARCH-like interpretation: local volatility is linked to the magnitude of departures and volatility at connected locations. Simultaneous spatial relationships can involve feedback and must be modelled jointly. The mechanisms differ between formulations.

“Within the same period” describes a statistical relationship. It does not establish causality or physically instantaneous transmission. With simultaneous spatial feedback, the model’s volatility component is generally not identical to the conditional variance obtained by conditioning on all other locations, but it is proportional to the conditional variance.

The Android beta of Spatial Risk Lab is now available! If you’d like to help me test it, please follow these three steps: 1. Join the testing group: https://groups.google.com/g/spatialrisklab 2. Opt into the beta: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.philippotto.spatialrisklab 3. Install the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.philippotto.spatialrisklab Google requires at least 12 testers to remain enrolled for 14 consecutive days before I can release the app publicly, so please stay enrolled during that period. I’d also really appreciate feedback on the gameplay, translations and any bugs you encounter!
